The alleged founder and operator of Archetyp Market, one of the world’s largest darknet drug marketplaces, has admitted to creating and running the platform. German investigators say the marketplace processed around €330 million in sales before it was shut down in 2025.
The 31-year-old made the admission at the start of his trial at the Frankfurt Regional Court, saying he was responsible for establishing and managing the online marketplace.
“It was a big mistake, and I deeply regret my actions.”
According to the defendant, Archetyp Market initially began as a small personal project but eventually grew into a major online marketplace for illegal drugs and pharmaceuticals.
Authorities shut down the platform in the summer of 2025. Prosecutors have described it as the largest online marketplace for drugs and pharmaceuticals in the world at the time of its closure.
Arrest of the Alleged Archetyp Market Operator
The defendant, a business administration graduate from Minden, was arrested in Barcelona in June 2025 by a special unit of Spain’s national police.
The investigation also involved raids in Germany and other countries, where authorities arrested additional suspects. Investigators reportedly traced the marketplace’s servers to the Netherlands.
The case was investigated by Germany’s Central Office for Combating Internet Crime, which operates under the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor General’s Office.
How Large Was Archetyp Market?
Investigators say Archetyp Market had grown into a large-scale darknet marketplace with hundreds of thousands of users.
According to prosecutors, the platform had:
- More than 600,000 customer accounts
- Around 2.3 million orders
- Approximately €330 million in sales
- Roughly 6.9 tonnes of drugs and other substances sold
Between November 2022 and the marketplace’s closure, investigators estimate that the platform handled approximately:
- 3.2 million pills
- 2.2 million tablets
- 326 liters of various drugs
The substances allegedly sold through Archetyp Market included cocaine, heroin, crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, crack cocaine, cannabis products, prescription medications, and performance-enhancing drugs.
Prosecutors allege that the defendant operated the marketplace with assistance from several moderators and personally earned approximately €20 million.
How Did Archetyp Market Work?
Archetyp Market operated as an online marketplace where buyers could browse listings and purchase illegal substances from different sellers.
Payments were made using Monero, a cryptocurrency known for its privacy-focused features and difficulty of tracing compared with traditional payment methods.
According to investigators, customers deposited funds into digital wallets, selected products, entered delivery information, and waited for sellers to approve and ship their orders.
The defendant has denied personally selling drugs through the marketplace, although he has admitted to creating and managing the platform itself.
Defendant Describes His Background
During the trial, the defendant spoke about his personal history and how he became involved in the darknet.
He said he first used illegal drugs at the age of 17. Later, he became increasingly dissatisfied with his career and struggled with depression.
Programming became an escape for him, he said. As Archetyp Market expanded, he eventually left his job and began working on the marketplace full time.
He described the project as giving him a new sense of purpose.
“For the first time, I looked in the mirror and no longer saw a lonely failure.”
The defendant operated online under the username “ASNT.” He explained that the name was an abbreviation of Apfelsaft naturtrüb, a German phrase meaning “naturally cloudy apple juice.” He said he chose the username because he happened to be drinking the beverage at the time.
Lawyer Highlights Defendant’s Libertarian Views
The defendant’s lawyer said his client’s views on drug use were influenced by liberal and libertarian ideas.
His lawyer also noted that Archetyp Market had rules prohibiting the sale of weapons and pornography, unlike some other darknet marketplaces.
The defendant told the court that he had started thinking about shutting down Archetyp Market shortly before his arrest.
He also described the pressure of hiding his involvement from his family and friends. Despite the circumstances, he said his arrest eventually brought him a sense of relief because he no longer had to keep the operation secret.
What Prison Sentence Could the Defendant Face?
Under Germany’s Narcotics Act, organized drug trafficking involving significant quantities can result in a prison sentence of five to 15 years.
The defendant’s confession and cooperation could potentially be considered by the court as mitigating factors when determining the sentence.
A verdict is expected in October.
The investigation was conducted by the Central Office for Combating Internet Crime, part of the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor General’s Office. The trial is taking place at the Frankfurt Regional Court.
Archetyp Market Case: What Happens Next?
The trial will determine the defendant’s criminal liability for his alleged role in creating and operating Archetyp Market. Prosecutors have presented evidence concerning the marketplace’s scale, transactions, users, and alleged profits.
With the defendant having admitted that he created and managed the platform, the court will now consider his confession alongside the other evidence gathered during the investigation.
The case highlights the scale that darknet marketplaces can reach and the international nature of investigations targeting online drug trafficking networks.
